IWT assists in the historic move of patients from Wishard to Eskenazi Health

December 7, 2013

In a highly coordinated process involving Eskenazi Health, Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, the U.S. Navy Reserves, the Indiana National Guard, MESH (formerly known as Managed Emergency Surge for Healthcare), and hundreds of volunteers and ambulances from across Central Indiana, patients receiving care at Wishard Memorial Hospital were moved to the new Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Health Hospital.

On December 7th, the old Wishard campus stopped accepting new patients at exactly 6:59 a.m., and the transfer of patients commenced at 7:00 a.m. Innovative Workflow Technologies (IWT) software applications, Bed Ready® and PICASO ED, were utilized by the move team to facilitate the flow of patients between the two campuses. Ahead of schedule, at 2:01 p.m., the final patient being transferred from Wishard Memorial Hospital arrived to their room at the new Eskenazi Hospital.

149 patients in all were successfully transferred from the Wishard campus to the Eskenazi campus. IWT staff were on hand throughout the move to ensure that all applications worked flawlessly during and subsequent to the move.

Operating Room Optimization

October 31,2013

Baptist Memorial Health Care in Memphis, TN, has contracted with Johnson Controls to install the HEO software solution, which reduces the energy spend of surgical suites by up to $10,000 per operating room per year.

Healthcare Environment Optimization (HEO) optimizes air exchange rates and energy use through integration of a hospital's building automation system with software that determines when an operating room is occupied by a patient. IWT is a partner in the development of this solution, along with architecture and engineering firm HDR, and Johnson Controls a leading provider of equipment, controls and services for heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and security systems.

Historically, operating rooms' heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have used a substantial amount of energy to effectively ventilate and eliminate airborne contaminants, even when the room is vacant. This wastes energy and valuable dollars, but with HEO, the air flow can be controlled in an efficient and safe manner.

Data determining whether the operating room is occupied by a patient is collected and routed by HEO to the building automation system, and determines which of the two HVAC system modes should be used: surgery or setback. When the system is in surgery mode, the HVAC system provides maximum air exchanges to the operating room, per regulatory and safety standards. But the air exchanges may be reduced to 25% when the operating room is not occupied by a patient, and HEO moves to this lower level in setback mode.

Through Healthcare Environment Optimization, hospitals can reduce energy use and operational costs while maintaining an uncompromising surgical environment for their patients and clinical staff.

Henderson, KY - IWT has recently partnered with global diversified technology and industrial leader, Johnson Controls on a new product, HEO (Healthcare Environmental Optimization). By combining the building management expertise from Johnson Controls with our software and interface components, a new product has been developed. This product aims to decrease air exchanges in operating rooms when unoccupied, saving customers energy and money.

PICASO is being implemented into the Wishard Emergency Department (ED), one of the busiest ED’s in the state, for quick and accurate caregiver documentation. The PICASO integration will provide an easier way to manage workflow and patient throughput; this will include tracking patients currently in the ED with an ED Patient Tracking Board.
