IWT's PICASO nursing documentation system has received 2011/2012 EHR Modular** Certification, which designates that the software is capable of supporting providers with Stage 1 meaningful use measures required to qualify for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). PICASO was certified on April 15, 2011 under ICSA Labs' ONC-ATCB Electronic Health Record program and is compliant in accordance with the criteria adopted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
PICASO 1 meets the following certification criteria:
Innovative Workflow Technologies (IWT) is an innovative and experienced software provider serving healthcare facilities who count on us on to enhance workflow efficiency and patient safety. IWT has been providing flexible, powerful IT solutions and services since 1986 predominantly in the healthcare market.

Technological advances have impacted healthcare facilities in numerous ways during the last couple of decades, by improving workflow and reducing operating costs. A hospital's inventory system can account for 40% of total operating budget, according to Materials Management Magazine (April 2010). Redesigning workflow with the use of technology can help keep inventory costs minimal. Implementing an inventory control system properly can positively influence a hospital's bottom line by streamlining processes and capturing correct patient charges; and keeping lower inventories on the floor without oversupplying. Innovative Workflow Technologies (IWT) has created an inventory management control system, PIMS Management. PIMS offers effective and efficient inventory control that can increase revenue and save hospital staff time.
PIMS was created for Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN by IWT as a part of the new hospital addition, to better manage materials in the nursing units' supply closets. When developing PIMS, it was important to create a system that is tightly integrated with nursing workflow to ensure that it is easy and convenient for the nurse to use. PIMS can easily be joined with IWT's nursing documentation software, PICASO. PIMS is accessed through a touch screen mounted on the wall in the supply closet; patient charges are immediately processed when scanning the inventory. Items in the closet are located in bins that are bar coded; including items that are non-billable. Nurses can then scan the items taken from the supply closet. Once an item is scanned, the usage data flows directly to the materials management application. The information is processed hourly to decrement the inventory allowing for the delivery of supplies at specific times throughout the day. This reduces the number of calls nurses have to make when running out of supply items, thus saving nursing time. The process also eliminates the need to make multiple daily trips to the nursing units to manually count the inventory in the supply closets.
When the two systems, PICASO and PIMS, are combined, features are added on that can increase patient safety by reducing the amount of costly hospital never-events. Keeping the appropriate amount of catheters on-hand will help reduce the amounts of UTI's for the hospital. Additionally, PICASO and PIMS working together can reduce documentation of the care given to the IV; PIMS will show if a new line has been taken out of the inventory closet, showing a history of whether or not a line has been changed out.
The materials management application is a crosswalk between inventory and information in the hospital; PIMS saves materials management staff time simply by issuing a closet report sent to the materials management logging in mistakes and showing current inventory and use.
The future of PIMS will have many other functions; for example, PIMS will be used to automate the patient charge flow for IV pumps.
